Cutting Table

Wen Redmond posted to the Quiltart Digest and asked people what their favorite piece of equipment is. Here is mine. I had a staionary cutting table for years which was made with this same table top. It had six bookcases underneath which provided a lot of room for storage, but the shelves got incredibly dusty and dirty. For my new table I wanted to be able to keep some things clean and out of sight. I also wanted to be able to move the table easily. The six large casters work great enabling me to move it very easily, and for the end units I purchased two base kitchen cabinets. I love this table. It is probably the most functional piece of equipment that I have.

I love the new studio!
A question: what are the dimensions of your rolling table, and what is on the surface? I'm about to redo my own space and have decided that a large, rolling table is a must.

April,
What are the cabinets and shelves sitting on? I love the idea of the casters! What a way to catch the best light.

I'd love to know what the materials the table is made of- other than the cabinet- wonderful idea. Casters from Home Dep or something?
Beautiful inspiring space!

What an incredible studio! I would be hard-put to leave it if it were mine! And I, too, love your rolling table... wonderful idea!

My cutting table top measures 48” x 96” made of plywood covered with formica with a 2” lip around the bottom edge, and it is reinforced with angle iron around the inner edge to keep it from warping. My husband had this made for me 22 years ago at a cabinet shop, and it is still in really good shape. The two base cabinets are 36”. I just bought the cheapest prefab cabinets that I could find, as my goal was functionality and not style. The shelves are made of that prefab white stuff (MDF?). I wanted a really convenient place to store all of my rulers and they all fit perfectly and are out of my way in the narrow little shelf at the top of the center shelving unit. The height/spacing of the shelves is as follows: bottom shelf 12”, middle shelf 11”, and the top shelf is 5”. The bottom shelf needed to be high enough to fit all of my big binders in. All of this sits on a 4’ x 8’ sheet of plywood which is painted white. The six casters are the swivel type that lock.

Your cutting table is amazing. It is a wonderful working place on wheels. Recently I went to the open studios down south called Art Trails and most of the artists had great functional work tables in their studios...but no one had wheels...such a great idea April.
